LONDON 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games

Roles and Responsibilities

A variety of organisations are involved with the 2012 Games.

Explanations of the key organisations' roles are:

  • The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is building the venues and physical infrastructure for the Games. It reports to the Secretary of State at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
  • The London 2012 Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) is responsible for planning, organising, publicising and staging the Games. They are the UK's main point of contact with the International Olympic Committee about the Games.
  • The Government is responsible for delivering the legacy of the Games, with the new Government Olympic Executive (reporting to the Secretary of State at DCMS) having a cross-Government coordinating role. The legacy work is being taken forward across all Government Departments, Devolved Administrations, the GLA (which is responsible for planning specific to London), LOCOG and the British Olympic Association and British Paralympic Association, and regional planning structures.
  • The overall Olympic project, all the work above, is coordinated by an Olympic Board that consists of the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, the Mayor of London, the Chair of the British Olympic Association and the Chair of LOCOG.
