LONDON 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games

Our ideas

Volunteering

Taking part in volunteering is a great way for young people to learn new skills, make a positive contribution to the community, and enhance their personal development.

The Games and associated events will provide a large number of opportunities for young people to engage in volunteering.

The Department is working with the London 2012 Organising Committee, to ensure that young people are included fully.

The Cabinet Office is also considering how 2012 can support the Government's wider strategies around volunteering. As part of that work, our plans include:

  • A new 'Young Ambassadors' programme for young people to champion sport, healthy living and the Olympic and Paralympic games in their schools, school sport partnerships and local communities.
  • Using the UK School Games events to provide high-profile volunteering opportunities for young leaders.
  • Exploring how to increase the volunteering opportunities for students in Further and Higher Education, and how to best recognise volunteering achievements and skills.
