Cutting Burdens

News update

Two important components of the National Agreement to help schools meet the challenges of the future are now in place:

  • The National Remodelling Team (NRT) who are responsible for the change management programme to help schools achieve the remodelling reforms. They will also work closely with LAs (NRT website)
  • The Implementation Review Unit (IRU) — featuring a Practitioner's Panel of nine heads, two senior teachers and one bursar -  which will consider the impact of new and current policies on the front line school staff who will implement them (IRU website)

The Department also has a website which aims to give front line workers in schools the chance to report and feedback on centrally imposed bureaucracy.  Go to www.dfes.gov.uk/reducingbureaucracy

There are certain key steps that all schools had to introduce by September 2003.

For specific advice on transferring the '24 tasks' from teachers to support staff, you can find this on the Match staff to activities page. This page also links to specific examples of how other schools have managed this process. However, it is advisable to follow stages 1 to 7 of the Bureaucracy Cutting Toolkit in order to gain the maximum impact on reducing teachers' workload.

On teachernet you can find a Toolkit and a number of case studies highlighting good practice in reducing administration and management time.

There are a number of measures to tackle bureaucracy in schools, including the National Remodelling Team and the Implementation Review Unit.

Bursars can also significantly contribute to the planning and management of schools resources. You may also find the information on support staff useful, particularly for case studies.
