Read Write Plus - How to use the site
The site provides estimates of adult skills need for:
- Literacy
- Numeracy
- Information Communication and Technology
- ESOL
for different local areas including:
- Government Office Regions
- Local Learning and Skills Councils
- Districts
- Wards
The data can be accessed either by clicking the area of interest on the map, or in the list below until the required level of detail is reached and then by clicking on the results option. You can also insert your full postcode to get your local ward results.
The estimates of skills need have been modelled from the Skills for Life Survey data (DfES, October 2003) in association with a specialist team from Exeter University. See the survey and modelling methodology for more details. The estimates include 'point' estimates - the most likely estimate - and also the 'credible intervals' (similar to the confidence intervals of classical statistics).
If you want literacy findings for:
- Yorkshire & the Humber Government Office Region
- click on England Results by GORs, and this will give you a table of Entry Level (EL) and below, Level 1 and Level 2 and above results for all GORs. The table gives:
- the point estimate [most likely estimate] number and proportion at EL (588,585 and 19%) and the credible intervals for the estimate, as a number and proportion (508,110-669,055 and 16%-22%).
- similar estimates for Level 1 and Level 2
- you can also generate charts of the findings by clicking on the relevant graphics below
- alternatively, click on Yorkshire & the Humber (in the list of GORs) and on Yorkshire & the Humber Results and this will give you Entry level 1 and below, Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1, Level 2 and above results. Again the table gives:
- the point estimate [most likely estimate] number and proportion at EL1 and below (135,185 and 4%) and the credible intervals for the estimate, as a number and proportion (93,290-177,080 and 3%-6%).
- similar estimates for EL2, EL3, Level 1 and Level 2
- to get Numeracy, ICT or ESOL results click on the relevant heading above the table.
- CT estimates are only available at Entry Level (1,951,000 or 63%) and Level 1 and above (1,156,835 or 37%). Credible Intervals are also shown.
- ESOL estimates are provided for total ESOL population (154,855 or 5%), an estimate of ESOL population at Entry level literacy (63,480 or 3%) and the credible intervals (55,850-71,105 or 2%)
- Swanage North Ward
- Click on South West Government Office Region (or use the map)

- This will give you a table of the literacy levels for the ward. The table gives:
- the point estimate [most likely estimate] number and proportion at EL (190 and 10%) and the credible intervals for the estimate, as a number and proportion (60-425 and 3%-23%)
- similar estimates for Level 1 and Level 2 and above
- You can also generate literacy figures for all wards in the Purbeck district by clicking on the table below: charts of the findings are also available by clicking on the relevant graphic
- to get Numeracy, ICT or ESOL results click on the relevant heading above the table.
- ICT estimates are only available at Entry Level (1,070 or 58%) and Level 1 and above (780 or 42%). Credible Intervals are also shown.
