DIUS: Student Loans for Higher Education in England financial year 2007-08 (Provisional)

DescriptionNational statistics on student loan outlay and repayments as well as borrower activity, produced by the Student Loans Company in consultation with DIUS statisticians, were released on 17th June 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The total amount lent to eligible Higher Education (HE) students during financial year 2007-08 was £3,905.0m, a rise of 32.2% compared to 2006-07.
  • During the 2007-08 financial year more than 51,000 borrowers with mortgage style loans and 9,000 with income contingent loans, repaid at least one of their loan accounts in full.
  • The balance outstanding (including loans not yet due for repayment) at the end of financial year 2007-08 was £21,944.3m of which £20,981.9m relates to income contingent loans.
  • At the end of 2007-08 there were 2.7 million borrowers; of these, 1.7 million had accounts in repayment status.
