| Description | Statistics on Pupil Absence are published as Neighbourhood Statistics - Announcement of the release of small area Pupil Absence by Pupil Characteristics in England 2006/07 and include data from England.
The latest statistics report on the period 2006/07 and update those previously released on 17/07/2007.
The key points from the latest release are:- The tables reinforce messages in previous publications about patterns of absence and about the relationship between absence and deprivation and absence and pupil characteristics at National, Regional and Local Authority (LA) level. These tables also provide the first opportunity to report on patterns of absence by pupil residency at Middle Layer Super Output Area (MSOA) level and Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA) level.
- In the 10% most deprived areas, the average total absence per enrolment is 12.3 days, compared to 7 days in the least deprived areas. Persistent Absentees (PAs) account for 22.2 per cent of all absences, with PAs resident in the 10% most deprived areas accounting for 5.2 per cent of all absences compared with PAs resident in the 10% least deprived areas who account for 0.7 per cent.
- Girls have higher levels of overall absence than boys in 82 per cent of local authority districts of residence. Pupils who are known to be eligible for free school meals have higher levels of overall absence in every local authority district of residence except Westminster. Among ethnic groups, white pupils have the highest levels of absence in 23 per cent of local authority districts of residence.
