Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1310 per pupil in real terms to St. Helens Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 47 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 2463 in 1997 to 31 by January 2005.
  • 410 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 590 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 79 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 66 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 76 per cent from 62 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 83 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 79 per cent in mathematics in St. Helens LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in St. Helens LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 40 per cent in 1998 to 56 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 3600 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
