Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1260 per pupil in real terms to Wirral Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 44 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 2180 in 1997 to 258 by January 2005.
  • 540 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 970 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 77 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 65 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 74 per cent from 63 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 81 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 76 per cent in mathematics in Wirral LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Wirral LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 45 per cent in 1998 to 57 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 6600 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
