Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1510 per pupil in real terms to Manchester Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 46 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 3404 in 1997 to 162 by January 2005.
  • 1140 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 1550 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 68 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 55 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 67 per cent from 54 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 72 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 70 per cent in mathematics in Manchester LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Manchester LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 29 per cent in 1998 to 43 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 9800 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
