Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1180 per pupil in real terms to Wigan Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 44 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 4755 in 1997 to 124 by January 2005.
  • 540 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 810 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 74 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 64 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 75 per cent from 64 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 79 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 77 per cent in mathematics in Wigan LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Wigan LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 43 per cent in 1998 to 51 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 6200 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
