Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1380 per pupil in real terms to Gateshead Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 50 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 606 in 1997 to 98 by January 2005.
  • 260 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 450 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 76 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 61 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 77 per cent from 60 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 78 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 77 per cent in mathematics in Gateshead LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Gateshead LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 40 per cent in 1998 to 60 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 3900 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
