Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1230 per pupil in real terms to Newcastle upon Tyne Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 39 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 2964 in 1997 to 0 by January 2005.
  • 450 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 670 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 67 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 51 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 66 per cent from 51 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 72 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 69 per cent in mathematics in Newcastle upon Tyne LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Newcastle upon Tyne LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 31 per cent in 1998 to 49 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 5200 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
