Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1390 per pupil in real terms to South Tyneside Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 48 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 1314 in 1997 to 63 by January 2005.
  • 280 MORE teaching assistants than in 1997
  • 450 MORE support staff than in 1997
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 72 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 62 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 75 per cent from 63 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 77 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 76 per cent in mathematics in South Tyneside LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in South Tyneside LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 37 per cent in 1998 to 52 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 2800 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
