Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1290 per pupil in real terms to Durham Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 47 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 5929 in 1998 to 62 by January 2005.
  • 540 MORE teaching assistants than in 1998
  • 1130 MORE support staff than in 1998
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 75 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 62 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 75 per cent from 65 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 79 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 77 per cent in mathematics in Durham LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Durham LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 36 per cent in 1998 to 50 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 9300 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
