Education

  • Pupil funding - For 2005/06, this government has allocated an extra £1010 per pupil in real terms to Essex Local Authority since 1997/98, an increase of 34 per cent.
  • The number of 5,6 & 7 year olds in classes over 30 has FALLEN from 9976 in 1999 to 907 by January 2005.
  • 2220 MORE teaching assistants than in 1999
  • 2760 MORE support staff than in 1999
  • Primary school results - Revised figures for 2005 show that 78 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English up from 64 per cent in 1997. In Maths this number is up to 73 per cent from 63 per cent in 1997.
  • Provisional figures for 2005 show that 80 per cent of eleven year olds reached the required standard in English and 76 per cent in mathematics in Essex LA.
  • GCSE - The percentage of secondary school pupils in Essex LA achieving 5 or more good GCSEs is up from 49 per cent in 1998 to 56 per cent in 2005 (provisional).
  • In 2005 there were 26300 free part-time early education places taken up by 3 and 4 year olds in maintained, private, voluntary and independent providers
