<item><title>DIUS: Student Support for Higher Education in England, Academic Year 2008/09 (Provisional)</title><pubDate>2008-11-27</pubDate><link>/rsgateway/DB/SFR/s000824/index.shtml</link><description>This SFR is prepared and published by the Student Loans Company (SLC) in consultation with DIUS statisticians. It is an update of SLC SFR 04/2007, published in November 2007. It will be the first release of early 2008/09 data on grants for maintenance, maintenance loans and tuition fee loans, as well as complete data for 2007/08. Figures will include the distribution of full, partial and nil maintenance grants.</description></item><item><title>DCSF: Education and Training Statistics for the United Kingdom: 2008</title><pubDate>2008-11-27</pubDate><link>/rsgateway/DB/VOL/v000823/index.shtml</link><description>This is the twelfth edition of Education and Training Statistics for the United Kingdom and is the third to be released via internet only. It provides statistics relating to education and training in the UK and includes Chapters relating to schools, post-compulsory education &#38; training and qualifications &#38; destinations, with annexes containing figures on education expenditure and UK population numbers. The 2007 Edition was published on 29/11/2007.<br /><br /><b>Key Points</b><br /><br />In the United Kingdom<ul><li>There were 9.7 million full-time and part-time pupils in 33,700 schools in 2007/08, compared with 9.3 million pupils in 34,600 schools in 1990/91.</li><li>Eighty-three per cent of 16-year olds and 70 per cent of 17-year olds were in full-time post-compulsory education and Government-supported training (GST) in 2006/07.</li><li>There were 3.6 million further education students during the academic year 2006/07, compared with 2.2 million in 1990/91.</li><li>There were 2.6 million [1.0 million part-time] higher education students in the academic year 2006/07 compared with 1.1 million in 1990/91.</li><li>In 2006/07, 45.2 per cent of young people in the United Kingdom achieved 2 or more A level passes or equivalent.  At GCSE/NQ Standard Grade level, 61.3 per cent of pupils in their last year of compulsory schooling gained 5 or more passes at grades A*-C/1-3.</li><li>Estimated expenditure on education services by central and local government in the UK in 2007-08 represented 5.4 per cent of Gross Domestic Product ï¿- an increase of 0.1 percentage points from 2006-07.</li></ul></description></item></channel>
